Our Sustainability Efforts
Due to our sustainability commitment and our desire to serve as an example to other organizations, we integrate sustainability actions into our own operations. This helps us to minimize our environmental impact and to show how a rapidly-growing company can achieve the symbiosis of environmental and social responsibility and bottom line business success.
As we tell our clients, true sustainability is a journey, not a destination. While there are always more improvements we can make, we are dedicated to continually improving our own sustainability. Below are examples of key actions we have taken at SymbioSus.™
Business operations
- All office electricity from 100% renewable sources.
- Website hosted by 100% wind-powered web hosting company.
- 96%-efficient office heating system.
- Use 100% post-consumer recycled office paper, and the highest available recycled content in other office supplies.
- Minimize paper use via electronic communication and record-keeping whenever possible. Use e-fax technology to eliminate need for physical fax machine and reduce paper usage. Print and copy double –sided whenever possible.
- All printed marketing material produced on 100% post-consumer content recycled paper. Print with plant-based inks whenever possible; use highest available percentage of post-consumer recycled content in letterhead and other company stationery – nearly all is 100% post-consumer content.
- Choose most environmentally responsible electronic options (EPEAT Gold rated laptop, Energy Star rated office equipment).
- Use of LED or CFL bulbs in office lighting.
- Recycle all possible office-related materials (paper, cardboard, plastic, metal); choose local/organic/fair trade food & beverage options whenever possible and compost all possible office food waste; minimize waste to landfill.
- Member of 1% For The Planet, contributing 1% of all of our revenues to organizations dedicated to environmental responsibility.
- Choose professional support services (printer, bank, web hosting company, mobile phone company, credit card company, attorney) that have a clear commitment to sustainability. Support local vendors whenever possible, as long as they meet our quality and performance standards. Encourage increased sustainability focus from other vendors or partners who are not as far along the sustainability curve.
Travel & transportation
- Company auto travel by hybrid car.
- Use web-conferencing and similar technologies to increase efficiency and productivity (for us and clients), and to minimize non-mission-critical air or car travel and emissions.
- Use the most environmentally-friendly transportation options whenever and wherever available, including (as appropriate to the situation): public transportation, train, hybrid rental cars – client does not pay a premium for this.
- Give preference to the most environmentally-responsible business hotels – client does not pay a premium vs. average business hotel rate for that city.
- Regularly measure travel and office carbon footprint, seek to minimize it with the actions above, and purchase verifiable, incremental carbon offsets for the portion of travel and overall carbon footprint that cannot be eliminated.
